Lebanese Falafel

Falafel is a delicious and popular Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas (or fava beans) mixed with various herbs, spices, and other ingredients. It is often considered a vegetarian or vegan alternative to meat-based dishes. The primary ingredients in falafel include:

1.      1- Chickpeas or Fava Beans: These legumes form the base of traditional falafel. They are soaked, ground, and mixed with other ingredients to create a dough-like mixture.

2-  Herbs and Spices: Commonly used herbs and spices include parsley, cilantro, garlic, cumin, coriander, and sometimes a touch of cayenne pepper for a bit of heat. These elements infuse the falafel with its distinctive flavor.

3- Onion: Chopped onions are often added to the mixture, providing flavor and texture.

4.       Baking Powder or Baking Soda: These leavening agents are used to help the falafel mixture puff up slightly during cooking.

The preparation involves grinding the chickpeas (or fava beans) and mixing them with the herbs, spices, and other ingredients to form a thick paste. The mixture is then shaped into small balls or patties, typically around the size of a golf ball.

Traditionally, falafel is deep-fried, which gives it a crispy exterior and a moist, tender interior. However, in modern and healthier versions, some people choose to bake or air fry the falafel instead.

Falafel is often served in various ways, depending on regional preferences. It is commonly wrapped in pita bread and a variety of fresh vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. It is typically drizzled with tahini sauce, a sesame-based sauce that adds a creamy and nutty flavor to the dish. Sometimes, hummus and pickles are also added to the wrap for extra taste and texture.

Falafel is a flavorful and versatile dish, enjoyed as street food, in restaurants, and even in home-cooked meals worldwide. Its popularity has made it a beloved option for vegetarians and those looking for tasty plant-based dishes.
